This concert features the UCSB TABLA ACCOMPANIMENT AND TABLA CLASSES,led by renowned guest lecturer, Pandit Hom Nath Upadhyaya.  The second portion of the concert will feature a sitar recital by Nasir Syed, Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology at UCSB and disciple of Ustad Shujaat Khan.  Nasir will be accompanied by Hom Nathji on tabla.

@7 p.m. Pinchas Steinberg leads The Cleveland Orchestra performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (“Titan”) and Nicolai’s Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor (his opera based on Shakespeare’s play).

@8:15 p.m.  The New York Gypsy All-Stars performs a cross-cultural mix of Balkan, Turkish, and Romany Gypsy music. Time Out New York calls the group’s young Macedonian/Turkish leader, clarinet virtuoso Ismail Lumanovski, “an adventurous, modern-minded front man, who leads his band through a varied terrain of Balkan, Turkish and Romany selections, spiked with jazz and Western styles.”
